Open Download Manager May not be safe (Removal Guide)

Open Download Manager is a browser add-on claiming to accelerate downloads by up to 500%. It does, however, show some malicious traits which is why malware experts recommend you to avoid using it, and if you already do, remove it.

What Does Open Download Manager Do?

Open Download Manager (ODM) is compatible with the most commonly used browsers such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It is practically a legitimate program claiming to be “the world’s fastest download manager and accelerator” and promises to do the following:

  • Supports proxy servers, ftp and http protocols, firewalls, redirects, cookies, authorization, MP3 audio and MPEG video content processing
  • Keeps yours computer safe with an enhanced virus protection on download completion
  • Other ODM features include multilingual support, zip preview, download categories, scheduler pro, sounds on different events, queue processor, html help and tutorials

As much as that may be true, ODM also appears to be an ad-supported program which will start displaying multiple pop-up ads in order to promote third parties. That, however, will not only disturb your browsing experience, but it may be dangerous for your computer because clicking these pop-ups may redirect you to unwanted websites which could also be infected with malware.

The Open Download Manager is also capable of monitoring your browsing habits and collecting sensitive data from you. While running on your PC, it may decrease your PC performance, cause security vulnerabilities and browser crushes.

How Does Open Download Manager Enter Your PC?

You can download the Open Download Manager from its official website, but it can enter your system uninvited too. This is possible if ODM is bundled with freeware you download from the Web. So, to protect your system from unwanted and malicious software, you must always uncheck the bundling option during the installation process of any freeware, and also opt for custom installation rather than accepting the “recommended” settings.

How to Remove Open Download Manager

If the Open Download Manager is already present on your system, we suggest that you remove it as soon as possible. Its features may seem useful to you at first, but its malicious traits outweigh its positives. The various pop-ups, possible redirects, browser crushes and slowed system performance are all result of the ODM. Not to mention its ability to monitor your online actions and collect personal information from you.

In order to remove the Open Download Manager, simply download a trustworthy anti-malware tool that will scan your whole system, detect the threat and remove it for you.
